Is there a credit score in France?
Not in the way you may know it. France has no shared consumer credit score like FICO in the United States or Experian scores in the United Kingdom. French banks build their own view of you from your file.
What exists instead: Banque de France registers
- FICP (Fichier national des incidents de remboursement des crédits aux particuliers): it lists people with characterised repayment incidents or over-indebtedness procedures. Lenders must check it before granting a consumer loan or a mortgage.
- FCC (Fichier central des chèques): it records bounced-cheque bans and the withdrawal of a bank card for misuse.
These are negative files only: being absent from them simply means no recorded incident. There is no positive score that grows with good behaviour.
What French banks actually look at
- Your bank statements, usually the last three months: overdrafts, rejected payments, regular savings, gambling or unusual spending.
- Debt-to-income ratio: capped at 35% including borrower insurance by the French financial stability authority (HCSF), with a maximum term of 25 years and limited exceptions.
- Remaining income (reste à vivre): what is left each month after all loan payments, compared with the size of your household.
- Job and income stability: type of contract, length of service, self-employed history, income currency.
- Deposit and savings left after the purchase.
- Each bank's internal scoring: lenders use their own models; they are not public and differ from one bank to another.
If you live abroad
Your foreign credit report does not transfer to France, but some lenders may ask for it, together with bank statements from your country, to understand your history. Clean, well-explained statements matter more than any number.
How to look stronger to a French bank
- Avoid overdrafts and rejected payments in the months before applying.
- Show regular savings and keep a safety margin after the purchase.
- Reduce or close small consumer loans if possible.
- Document every source of income and the origin of your deposit.
